Shackleton - Three EPs: the best disc of electronics of the year and a jewel of the Dubstep

The name of the Dubstep of 2009 does not belong to the parish of the stamp Hyperdub Records. Alice Keys - The Element of Freedom: self-help manual with sound-track

Grasp I Am, the penultimate disc of Alice Keys, it left me without knowing very well by what abide. For what the singer was looking in this work was not stopping going out to the light, and it remained in a quite worthy attempt but that for my taste did not come off completely. He did not hesitate to clarify that his idea was to be liberated of the ties and pressures of the success and of the expectations to create something that was depending neither on currents nor on interests, something that was simple and without pretensions. Regrettably, so good intentions have remained in borages water.

The Element Of Freedom leads to mistake with his baptism. The introduction of the disc, where Alice one explains his shoot and of step to herself, gives us idea of the type of letters to that we are going to listen, of the subject-matter that is going to talk each other in the album, and this first fear turns out to be perfectly confirmed with the rosy qualifications of his songs. Other one of those who are saved fully is, for my surprise, ‘a Putt It In A Love Song‘, the collaboration with Beyoncé, who once again has convinced me that is much better what it does with others that alone she throws it. With a rhythm arrasador and completely different from what has accustomed Alice to us on the whole disc, this song is an authentic revulsive for so many ballad and so much flea market love. And the fact is that Beyoncé fixes this type of topics, it is enough to listen to the “animated face” of his last disc and to compare it with other one to see thousand returns that give to him.

If these two songs had marked more the line for which it thinks up the disc, he would not have hesitated to give him a note of 7,5 or even 8, because really it is deserved, but unfortunately, the monotony and not complete expectations weigh more.

The rest of the songs is not that they are bad, the fact is that they are mediocre, and bearing in mind the talent of this woman, it seems inexcusable to me, almost more than if they were horrible. After a début that saw the light in 2006, the singer has taken four years before deciding to publish new material, which date to see the light will be next February 1.

lately, listening to a few supposed big ones of R&B and of the soul, everything results sooner or later in certain grade of device and superficiality, of monotony without any originality that they try maquilar behind big names to the production. Nevertheless, this song has left the best mouth flavor to me. Much closer of ‘Like to Star‘, the topic that threw it to the first line of the lists of sales, that to ‘Putt Your Records On’, which did that I was ending boring, this simple is what its own name indicates: simple, but not for boring, and elegant, very elegant it.

Spandau Ballet - Once More: innocuous versions

Yes, here they all are, or almost all, from ‘True‘ in ‘Communication‘, passing for ‘Gold‘, ‘I'll Fly For You’, ‘Only When You Leave’ or ‘Communication‘. Is the only one that I lack ‘How Many Lies?’, but it is in the DVD.

He interviews Magician: "we have found the pleasure to be expressed us in a less abstract, more daily way"

Sevillian Magician turned from the publication of a magnificent EP, Two-dimensional (2001, Limbo Starr), in which the group was already beginning signing some of his hits, ‘Jellyfish‘ or ‘A Skin of Astrakhan’, in one of the most personal projects of the Spanish scene, diviendo the public between a few very faithful followers and who could not with the voice of Miguel Rivera. We go, the habitual division that any good project causes.

At the end of 2009 it surprises not to have had a continuation of his third album of study, Magician (2006, Limbo Starr), but the above mentioned waiting has been explained a few days ago, when the record company of Madrid Mushroom Pillow has announced that Magician there were his new signing and that his next work, At the time of The Sun it will be published at the beginning of 2010.

Therefore, the Sevillian ones close a stage with Limbo Starr with three good discs, two EPs and a big number of followers. Now it has to begin again, in words of proper Miguel Rivera, with whom we speak to know more details of the next disc.

At the time of the Sun it is the title of the new album: What does it mean?

The title is extracted of the Song letter for September, one of the topics of the disc (”... at the time of the sun they sprout arcoíris new …”).

We liked because it is a vitalist phrase, the sun has positive connotations, in the life in general, and in particular in the letter of this song: after the darkness, the birth of the day, the beginning of something new. It describes enough good feeling of the group in these moments.

It will go out published the first months of 2010: Some more concrete date? What absence still for finishing off?

We want that it goes out as soon as possible in 2010. We are ultimando details before ordering it to factory. (I hope that it should be already in the stove when this interview is published)

The change of course seems to be transmitted even in the title of the new album, after three colors namesakes: Is it like that? Will not there already be any more colors?

That thing about the colors was something that arose in a spontaneous way between the fans of the group (when we extract our second disc without title) to distinguish it from the previous one. It seemed entertaining to us and we begin referring to them that way in the interviews, although officially none has title.

Jordi Gil is the producer of the album. At the last works only you have been employed with him. What reaches port to the sound of the band? Why not to change and to try with other names?

Jordi meets the personal group and musically long ago. We are friendly from the university and we have shared lines in several groups throughout the years (Supertube, Washer, the band of Toteking …).

Jordi is almost always capable of interpreting to the first one the intention that we want to give him to a new song, although we show it to him in his most original form touched with one acoustic or engraved precariously in the place during an essay. He has been able to see the potential that had the new material and has been implied very much at artistic and personal level on this new disc. Thanks to his work, topics as Silence have become big.

Also, if it was small, Jordi has the best study (Sputnik) that exists right now in Seville and probably one of the best of the country. We have enjoyed to the big thing recording there these new songs!

Facing the new album. What sound have you obtained to take shape in the topics?

In the making of the discs there is always an addition, an expression way of joke that we use recurrentemente between us to invoke the sound that we want to obtain in what we are recording. In this case, the swearword has been naturalistic. We wanted that the recording was reflecting with entire loyalty the sound of the group touching live, such which, without additives. We place ourselves in the room the band to the finished one, with our instruments and our ampli, without separations, meeting the faces as in the essay place. And this way we record every song. We try to preserve the live captures as intact as possible, adding at a later stage only the essential thing in some topics. There are a few videos in our myspace that reflect very well all this.

And of course, the big person in charge of that the sound of the group sees faithfully captured on the disc has been Fabián Romero, the best technician of sound of this galaxy. In a recording in which it was giving priority to the naturalness, there was vital the presence of better who can make us sound.

Can you move forward any of them? How many will be there?

During August we record 14 songs, of which we have chosen 10 for the CD. The edition in vinyl will take one more topic.

Will there be collaborations?

This has been a very home-loving disc, like touching with the companions a little bit in the lounge of your house. The collaborations have belonged to the people “of the family”, good Sevillian musical friends: Israel Diezma (lap steel in Last sea), Joaquín Calderón (violin in The raft and melodic in Garagato), Manolo Solo (choirs and letter of, but I it am not) and Javier Centeno (trumpet in Garagato).

Also it has been a big honor to be able to be provided with the pen and the inkwell of our friend Germán Coppini, who has written the Garagato letter.
Finally – and more than a collaborator an indispensable piece already in the sound of the group – is necessary to mention César Díaz, who has given us his mastery again to the keyboards. César (friend of the infancy and with whom I founded Long Spiral Dreamin’ somewhere near 93) has accompanied Magician in the past during several tours and it will do it again in the tour of this disc.

The front belongs to your friend, the painter of La Mancha Juan Miguel Redondo “Juanmi“. It is incredible, a big design. What meaning transmits you to you?

Juanmi is an "artistaco". Rebosa imagination and madness for four sides and his painting is like it.

We wanted something different for the front of this disc, it moved away from the esthetics minimalista that was prevailing in the previous ones, and, when we were thinking about it, it happened to us to throw a glance to a catalog of an exhibition of Juanmi and we saw it clear. Flipamos with the force that have his pictures, with how of between of the colors jumble chorreantes a heap of mini-scenes is discovered, as if of a visual game it was talking each other. It seemed to us that it had a lot to do with our music. Finally, of between all the works of the catalog we decide that Comecolores was the perfect front for our disc.

What has changed in Magician since you were publishing Magician (red) in 2006 till now? What have you learned during these three years?

Since in this time enough things have happened.

Last August Pablo Cabra took the relief of David García, who had been ours battery up to the date.

Pablo had already worked with us during the tour along Latin America of 2006 and in the project Coppini with Magician, so he did not suppose any difficulty to adapt itself to the rhythm of work of the group.

After more than three years of our last throwing and of having been sufficiently little active in 2008 – for causes, we say, bureaucratic – dedicating again our energies only to do songs has returned the vitality to the group and has brought also the need to transmit this renewed vitality.

Magician has changed as well as our persons, it has matured with us. Perhaps it departs from the innocence of eight years ago little area has yielded to the disappointment and the irony and small other to the happiness of living.

On the other hand we have found the pleasure to be expressed us in a slightly less abstract, more daily way; finally more how do we feel in this moment of our lives.

What yes we could have verified after these years is that, it does not import what courses we take, the stamp of the music of Magician continues there, it is something that lasts in the time because it is authentic …

Three álbumes and two EPs in five years is a good balance: How have you lived through this first beginning stage in the group?

Since like any other group that takes eight years of baggage, I imagine. There have been big moments, even better moments, bad moments, awful moments and … started again. Right now we are in return to be begun. Reward!

How was it the experience of sharing project and stage with Germán Coppini? I saw you in the Contempopranea and you were brilliant.

Germán is a Big one of Spain. It already had a big hollow in our hearts like artist and after meeting him, other was gained as friendly. To allow us to handle this repertoire made us feel like a child whom they make alone in a bric-a-brac shop.

Coppini and Magician together have much that to say still; remain attentive to his screens …

How did the signing arise for Mushroom Pillow? Were there other alternatives?

When we begin moving to think about how with whom to edit the disc several offers arose. Of all of them, which more seduced us was that of Mushroon Pillow. Also, Pablo and Javi had already worked with them with Mr. Stone and they gave me good references.

What more I liked when we met Frames and Keina is that never they tried to sell to me the motorbike. They look like to me the working people and the speed is demonstrated walking.

High On Fire stops recording his new disc

Californian High On Fire tries to give the stroke again with a new disc that will go for title Snakes For The Divine and will be published on February 23. If Mastodon could surely that those of Oakland can become massive.

The group recorded it in the studies The Pass of Los Angeles with the producer Greg Fidelman, who took charge of World Painted Blood de Slayer. Matt Pike continues at the head of this spectacular power trio that they complete Jeff Matz and Give Kensel.

Joaquín Sabina - Vinegar and roses: it costs below and without brakes

The group of Madrid Rocket has published one of the best national álbumes of 2009, Rocket (2009, New Means), which was done of requesting after an autopublished EP, Simulacrum (2006), with which they already hooked many people to us thanks to his sticky melodies and particular histories.

Two of his principal components, Enrique Godino (guitar, voice and arrangements) and Urs Hampel (guitar, voice and arrangements) speak to us about his letter of credence in length (the 15th one of our list of national débuts of the decade), of why it was late so much, and of course where from his letters come.

One opens the digipack of the album and reads: "Hello, we are a Rocket”. Who is Rocket really and before whom do they present before themselves?

E: This is still the typical phrase of beginning of concert, redundant in general, and more on the disc. Urs sometimes says that the neck is going to twist me if I say it again directly, but I cannot remedy it and he he does not speak seriously. It is like the titulín of the disc.

U: We are the brothers banana trees Ramiro and Rodrigo Cortillas, Enrique Godino y Urs Hampel. And I always speak seriously!

E: Mmmmnnnno I know … there was no idea and perhaps for a thing that we could save ourselves easily …

Why has it been late so much in going out since it was awaited?

E: The common exposition was that they were not turning it to call mock-up, but we do not start very well in the first test in study and we were a little grated, so that we decide to make it alone not to have to accept things that we did not like completely.

We start again in a rural house. Only the battery was recorded well, the rest was not costing hardly ever. We were touching for line outdoors (luxurious!) and listen for monitors and while Rodrigo touch inside the house. We did not have talkback and we were the whole moment giving screams. A few unexpected coinhabitants were bothering us three days; they were going out every day to do an excursion and we were making use of this moment to record. They hated us because we had punctured a mat to them accidentally. I was dealing with the sound and was learning and being wrong on the march. There was good roll and we record all a few times, but only Petri, I always win and I am not sure we ended up by liking. We believed that it was going to be always equal of entertained.

The hazlo-tú-mismo in recording can become a nightmare; to have to do a good capture, one joins him that this one has to dream well. We start in March, 2007 until May, 2008 we did not have all the engraved bases. We were lost by the bases more than one year but also during this time there were 7 months in which I was not in Madrid scarcely.

Without study it is quite much slower, because also it is free and if it is free, you fall asleep a little with certain decisions. The miscellanies were hard because we fill almost all the hollows of the songs with several elements and it was difficult to reach a commitment. Also it is difficult to mix without to your neighbor him of a nerves attack.

You have published it under your Micro stamp Macro and it is distributed by New Means. Why do I motivate you have created your stamp instead of having published it under other? I am sure that you would have offers …: Were not they satisfying any to you?

E: You create or not it, nobody offered us anything. Nothing that we already did not have, is understood.

U: Not even a tail cao.

For curiosity: how many copies have you pressed?

E: 1000 CDs (on the verge of doing other 1000), 500 defective LPs that are on the way to being recycled by others better sonantes.

Have the problems that you already had with the vinyl been solved?

E: Yes, but not themselves, skylight. We are going to be sick the villains, we will receive them well sonantes.

How is the union with New Means for the distribution? One if the same it cannot only, is it better to join and to unite forces?

E: It is fundamental to be in shops as FNAC and in each and everyone of the smallest shops, and alone we cannot manage that. Although it is not bandaged, although it is only so that the people see it round there, it is necessary to be in shops. In New Means they have received us phenomenal, they like what we do and hope to keep on working with them in a lot of time because they work well.

You threw the album at the beginning of the summer and they have already happened a few months. How has it been the reception on the part of the criticism and on the part of the public? We go: has it sold a little?

E: The criticism has been so good that it scares. We have not read almost anything bad of the disc and almost all the means have reviewed it, but it is already known that that is not translated necessary in sales. In general, it seems that the reception has been more an enthusiast in blogs and digital means that in means with more crossbeam or more traditional. What yes we notice is that there are more people in the concerts, that it turns out easier to obtain dates for skittles out of Madrid to us and that, finally, the people know the songs and hum them directly.

During too much time we have thought (at least I) that the people were not connecting with us live, they seemed attentive but there were no moments as that have lived after announcing the disc. It is a big mitigation to verify across the public that we are not so complicated as it is said.

In 2006 you published your EP, Simulacrum also autoedited, produced by Sergio Delgado and you yourselves, in addition to with the help of Pyrenean lake Errazkin. How was the experience?

E: It was another long passage for the desert, in words of the proper Pyrenean lake. It seems ours but. Now then, we spend it to ourselves very well in this recording and manage to attract attention. Before recording the EP, we already had topics for a length, but we decide to moor well 4 topics not to get longer very much … and in the end we always throw ourselves several months the same way, but again for that thing about: Sergio was doing a good price to us in his study and in this epoch it had so much well full work that, as it is normal, was leaving ours for few hollows that it had.

The disc was recorded very rapidly but it was mixed very slowly. In this step it is where Pyrenean lake helped us more, explaining to Sergio how we had to dream to give in the nail quickly.

U: To record with Sergio was like recording with Phil Spector, although it does not have gun that we consist and is much more nice.

The letters reflect the routine character of every day. At the time of writing them: How does arise the inspiration and the approach of so nearby topics?

E: It is necessary to stop to hope that something should happen, immediately afterwards to register it in a letter.

U: That thing about every day I do not realize it so well, although the routine character is an inspiration, of course. Normally there is a phrase, read over there, heard in the meter or a bar, or one that comes alone, without accompanist and that takes a history inside, or that serves at least of desencadenante as something. Sometimes one does not know very well about what he is speaking (as now, for example), and the phrases are taking a sense, or several, or none – the important thing is, just as with the musical part of a song that the letter in the end "squares" you, that you have the sensation, yes, this way it is well and this way it has to be. After Pete's death it was desolated emotionally and did not know if I might recover. But we keep on touching without him because he had wanted it like that. Why has the group always been of cult?

Are the ancient topics that you have re-recorded done by you now how in Me, Cyborg?

The title is an autoparody because, apart from sending to Me, Robot of Asimov, his gestation coincided after a series of operations that they have filled the metal body to me. They do not change very much although we have incorporated several devices that are going to contribute different tones to the topics, although the bases are the same. There will be two discs, the environmental one and one of songs that will be able to join in the same listening, as we did with the topic ‘Synthesis‘.

The Planets - Four Sticks: a very irregular result where the Fleming continues

RTVE recovers the videos of The crystal Ball
