The group of Madrid Rocket has published one of the best national álbumes of 2009, Rocket (2009, New Means), which was done of requesting after an autopublished EP, Simulacrum (2006), with which they already hooked many people to us thanks to his sticky melodies and particular histories.
Two of his principal components, Enrique Godino (guitar, voice and arrangements) and Urs Hampel (guitar, voice and arrangements) speak to us about his letter of credence in length (the 15th one of our list of national débuts of the decade), of why it was late so much, and of course where from his letters come.
One opens the digipack of the album and reads: "Hello, we are a Rocket”. Who is Rocket really and before whom do they present before themselves?
E: This is still the typical phrase of beginning of concert, redundant in general, and more on the disc. Urs sometimes says that the neck is going to twist me if I say it again directly, but I cannot remedy it and he he does not speak seriously. It is like the titulín of the disc.
U: We are the brothers banana trees Ramiro and Rodrigo Cortillas, Enrique Godino y Urs Hampel. And I always speak seriously!

Rocket is the title of the album of début. Namesake. Emphasizing the philosophy of the group?
E: Mmmmnnnno I know … there was no idea and perhaps for a thing that we could save ourselves easily …
U: It is his for the first album, and for the following ones also, who knows … Caetano Veloso made it like that...
Why has it been late so much in going out since it was awaited?
E: The common exposition was that they were not turning it to call mock-up, but we do not start very well in the first test in study and we were a little grated, so that we decide to make it alone not to have to accept things that we did not like completely.
We start again in a rural house. Only the battery was recorded well, the rest was not costing hardly ever. We were touching for line outdoors (luxurious!) and listen for monitors and while Rodrigo touch inside the house. We did not have talkback and we were the whole moment giving screams. A few unexpected coinhabitants were bothering us three days; they were going out every day to do an excursion and we were making use of this moment to record. They hated us because we had punctured a mat to them accidentally. I was dealing with the sound and was learning and being wrong on the march. There was good roll and we record all a few times, but only Petri, I always win and I am not sure we ended up by liking. We believed that it was going to be always equal of entertained.
The hazlo-tú-mismo in recording can become a nightmare; to have to do a good capture, one joins him that this one has to dream well. We start in March, 2007 until May, 2008 we did not have all the engraved bases. We were lost by the bases more than one year but also during this time there were 7 months in which I was not in Madrid scarcely.
Without study it is quite much slower, because also it is free and if it is free, you fall asleep a little with certain decisions. The miscellanies were hard because we fill almost all the hollows of the songs with several elements and it was difficult to reach a commitment. Also it is difficult to mix without to your neighbor him of a nerves attack.

For all this and more we have taken the strip, but the good thing (in our opinion) is that the recording in itself has not been a roll pajero of one and thousand times repeated a capture. More than half of the songs has battery, down and at least a guitar live hairdos, if not more (the rest of topics was recorded by means that were not allowing us to register every all the instruments simultaneously: the mobile study was growing little by little!). The winds were recorded during 2 evenings. The voices were done also on the march and other arrangements were already in the head and it was a question of trying two or three times up to meeting on an acceptable result, and for another thing.
You have published it under your Micro stamp Macro and it is distributed by New Means. Why do I motivate you have created your stamp instead of having published it under other? I am sure that you would have offers …: Were not they satisfying any to you?
E: You create or not it, nobody offered us anything. Nothing that we already did not have, is understood.
U: Not even a tail cao.
For curiosity: how many copies have you pressed?
E: 1000 CDs (on the verge of doing other 1000), 500 defective LPs that are on the way to being recycled by others better sonantes.
Have the problems that you already had with the vinyl been solved?
E: Yes, but not themselves, skylight. We are going to be sick the villains, we will receive them well sonantes.
How is the union with New Means for the distribution? One if the same it cannot only, is it better to join and to unite forces?
E: It is fundamental to be in shops as FNAC and in each and everyone of the smallest shops, and alone we cannot manage that. Although it is not bandaged, although it is only so that the people see it round there, it is necessary to be in shops. In New Means they have received us phenomenal, they like what we do and hope to keep on working with them in a lot of time because they work well.
You threw the album at the beginning of the summer and they have already happened a few months. How has it been the reception on the part of the criticism and on the part of the public? We go: has it sold a little?
E: The criticism has been so good that it scares. We have not read almost anything bad of the disc and almost all the means have reviewed it, but it is already known that that is not translated necessary in sales. In general, it seems that the reception has been more an enthusiast in blogs and digital means that in means with more crossbeam or more traditional. What yes we notice is that there are more people in the concerts, that it turns out easier to obtain dates for skittles out of Madrid to us and that, finally, the people know the songs and hum them directly.
During too much time we have thought (at least I) that the people were not connecting with us live, they seemed attentive but there were no moments as that have lived after announcing the disc. It is a big mitigation to verify across the public that we are not so complicated as it is said.
In 2006 you published your EP, Simulacrum also autoedited, produced by Sergio Delgado and you yourselves, in addition to with the help of Pyrenean lake Errazkin. How was the experience?
E: It was another long passage for the desert, in words of the proper Pyrenean lake. It seems ours but. Now then, we spend it to ourselves very well in this recording and manage to attract attention. Before recording the EP, we already had topics for a length, but we decide to moor well 4 topics not to get longer very much … and in the end we always throw ourselves several months the same way, but again for that thing about: Sergio was doing a good price to us in his study and in this epoch it had so much well full work that, as it is normal, was leaving ours for few hollows that it had.
The disc was recorded very rapidly but it was mixed very slowly. In this step it is where Pyrenean lake helped us more, explaining to Sergio how we had to dream to give in the nail quickly.
U: To record with Sergio was like recording with Phil Spector, although it does not have gun that we consist and is much more nice.
The letters reflect the routine character of every day. At the time of writing them: How does arise the inspiration and the approach of so nearby topics?
E: It is necessary to stop to hope that something should happen, immediately afterwards to register it in a letter.
U: That thing about every day I do not realize it so well, although the routine character is an inspiration, of course. Normally there is a phrase, read over there, heard in the meter or a bar, or one that comes alone, without accompanist and that takes a history inside, or that serves at least of desencadenante as something. Sometimes one does not know very well about what he is speaking (as now, for example), and the phrases are taking a sense, or several, or none – the important thing is, just as with the musical part of a song that the letter in the end "squares" you, that you have the sensation, yes, this way it is well and this way it has to be. Neither him to turn is well, but it is possible that it ends up by sounding quite very wisely and affected.
might ‘My tie’ be the antithesis of the book of Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain, ‘Please, Kill me’?
U: I leave the antitheses for the chairs but I suppose that there are enough persons in our society whose life looks alike a little to that of the protagonist of this song – and those who secretly would like that it was looking alike a little more to that of the painted the portrait ones in “Please, kill me”.
Is it easier to write on nearby and daily topics or on wise topics and aíres intellectual? What do you value more?
U: An extra drop is an extra drop, as he says an old aboriginal proverb, be wise or vulgar. In general, the desirable thing at least for me would be that the letter does not sound forced, that you are provoked by a smile, an attack of anxiety, an itch in the temple … anyway, some reaction. A song pop is not an oration and it is no that of giving lessons to anybody.
‘A Magnificent Mammal’ treats, in your own words, on: "this class of persons who only live for the others and they never seem to think about himself. It is inspired in someone that I meet but who then does not look alike in anything in the person described in the song”. Does this type of persons proliferate? Do the dolphins keep on being seen by you as “do a few he-goats who only want go out nice in the photos”?
U: This is what has to give answers in writing, then they remain there forever – argh. What I have just said also, mother. But to answer the question: Neither not, finally proliferates this type of persons and the dolphins.

The solitude and the non-conformism also capture in other topics as ‘The Club Cooks’ or ‘I am not sure’. What is there after this vision?
E: ‘The Club Cooks’ it is based on the meetings of tuppers that we were making a group of friends and friends before becoming bourgeois: we were cooking together for the whole week, were putting it in tuppers and later we had something of that for dinner. We were doing it every Tuesday and were changing house. One of the members had a mishap with the rapid pan; the entire kitchen filled with Jewish women. It is a way of remembering it. ‘I am not sure’ he speaks about frustration and envies, but it is a past water. Another thing to remember.
U: I am afraid that later they are not going to include Enrique's answer to us in the second part of “Please, kill me”... What I love there are the interpretations that the people give to the letters, like yours. Perhaps the tuppers take his unconformist facet, veto you to know …
“The world is guilty along with his parents of his victim's condition”. It is a very strong just as guessed right affirmation. Can you explain more this vision on the current state?
U: The current state … tralalíín. I do not know if I understand well but anyhow, the phrase refers that often is the most comfortable thing turn or to present itself as a victim - of the circumstances, of the difficult infancy etc. not to have to act. I believe that many people live with this vision if the same, at least sometimes … and I include myself. Surely there are the people who really is a victim of something or of someone, probably almost all in major or minor grade, but the important thing is not to allow to drag to the passivity and avoid the responsibility for the proper life through the fault of this feeling, not even when it is based. End of the consultation, we are progressing.
You focus the marriage like torture, like mental hospital, as national sport, like phenomenal program …: Which are these complaints for your part?
U: The above mentioned, the songs can be interpreted as it should please but I say to you that with the national sport we were not referring to the marriage, and with the phenomenal program … Our complaints are not the everlasting ones either: that the soup is too much salted and that nobody understands us. Ah, none we are married we it nor have been, we it ever nor will be until anybody does it.
The current crisis might have an anthem in ‘Request‘. If the Government or any party or political organization was asking you for it like campaign topic: would you her transfer previous payment, skylight is?
E: Skylight! Quite for the pasta. The papapapá of the refrain without letter is done in accordance with the typical scheme of anthem of political party (see dad dad papápapa swallows or papáaaa it swallows papapa papaaaapa …).
U: Even free. I am imagining unimaginable scenes.
Concerning sound: what is the importance of the wind metal in Rocket?
E: It is a beautiful sound, we love and cannot avoid to think about trumpets and trombonists on having composed.
Without Bo Diddley, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks …: What would Rocket be?
E: Some different good.
On having listened to your music, the adaptation of sounds and musical culture is magnificent since it is not easy to do it facing Spanish so well, there is no so much previous baggage. Belong you to these groups of which it departs from a few influences recognized later to transform them into another new sound? Without the grandparents or the parents, would not the children exist?
E: We do not try to re-visit any style in particular but neither we try to forget or conceal our influences.
U: The whole world has influences. And the supposed orphans have papis also. That thing about the cultural / musical baggage I believe that it has been decades since it is there in any Occident, although in Spain the process was starting later. But I have no doubts that the rock'n roll and everything what has come with him already is part of our history, although it is originally a North American music.
The problem is that many people still think that the alone fact of coming from England, p.ej., it means that your music is more quality. On the other hand, Spain has a proper popular musical culture that does not exist already in countries like Germany and which I would not renounce if I was Spanish. Also it has a special connection with Latin America that seems interesting to me and that he would be worth while exploring more musically in pop, let's say of Anglo-Saxon ancestry.
Diego Cano has taken charge of the design and the work has stayed of note. What seems to you?
E: The folder, jaja. It has been a process almost so long as that of the proper disc. Chapeau for Diego for nice that is and for keeping back. His problem was to give us several options; there it is when we tie him up and almost it resigns. I believe that it has hung some previous studies and molan almost the same as the final front.
U: The best thing is that, apart from being nice, it represents us.
Diego Cano: Neither it is not that it has a clear meaning. The disc is called “a Rocket“, there are neither a very clear concept nor topics appellants, so I tried that it was reflecting his sound departing from the name of the group: the naturalness and freshness (rain, stars, clouds, stars) on the elaborated and complex of the structures of the songs (machines, hardware).
